Why Should We Hire You? Best Answers & Examples (2026)

By the TheGreatCV editorial team · Last updated 7 October 2026 · 8 min read

Short answer: do not list your qualities. Show that you understand what the role needs, prove you can deliver it with one specific result, and finish with what you will do for them. Aim for 60 to 90 seconds.

This question often comes near the end of an interview, so it is your last chance to tie everything together. Interviewers are not asking you to brag. They want three things: do you understand the job, can you do it, and will you fit the team. A generic answer fails all three, while a specific one can recover ground lost earlier.

The question comes in many forms: "Why are you the best candidate?", "What makes you right for this role?", "Why should we pick you over others?" The answer below works for all of them.

The 3-part formula

  1. Their need. Open with what the role requires, taken from the job description and your research. "From what I understand, this role needs someone who can manage a high volume of customer queries while keeping satisfaction high."
  2. Your proof. Match your strongest relevant skill to that need with one concrete result. Use a number, a project or a clear outcome, not an adjective.
  3. Your contribution. Close with what you will do in the first few months, and why you want this company specifically.
Before the interview: underline the three or four things the job post stresses most. Your answer should speak to at least two of them. Your resume bullets, built with our work experience guide, are the best source of proof points.

Sample answers

Experienced professional (sales)"This role is about growing accounts in a competitive region, and that is what I have done for the last five years. Last year I took a territory that was flat and grew it by 32 percent by focusing on repeat clients and a better follow-up process. I would bring the same approach here, starting with a review of your top accounts in my first month."
Fresher (software)"You are looking for someone who can contribute to the product quickly and keep learning. During my final year I built and deployed a billing app used by 40 users at a local clinic, handling the database and the front end myself. I learn fast, I am comfortable taking feedback on code, and I would like to grow into your backend team."
Career changer (teaching to HR)"This role needs someone who can train people and handle sensitive conversations well. I spent six years teaching and mentoring, designed onboarding for new staff, and completed an HR certification last year. I bring strong communication and a habit of making complex rules easy to follow, and I am ready to learn your systems quickly."
Customer service"Your team handles a lot of calls, and consistency under pressure matters most. In my current role I average a customer satisfaction score of 94 percent while handling around 60 contacts a day. I stay calm with difficult customers and I document everything clearly, which would help your team reduce repeat contacts."
Little or no experience"I know I have less experience than some candidates, so I have focused on what I can offer now. I completed a data analytics course, built three projects using real datasets, and learned your main tools on my own. I pick things up fast and will bring energy and a willingness to be trained your way."

These are templates. Replace every number and example with your own real ones, and never claim a result you cannot explain in detail.

Weak vs strong

Weak"I am hardworking, a quick learner and a team player. I really need this job and I will give my best."
Strong"You need someone to cut report turnaround time. I rebuilt my team's reporting process and cut it from 3 days to 1. I can do the same here."
Weak"I think I am better than the other candidates."
Strong"Whatever others bring, here is what I can offer: five years of experience in exactly this kind of work and a record of hitting targets."

Frequently asked questions

How do I answer "Why should we hire you?"

Use the 3-part formula: their need, your proof, your contribution. Keep it to 60 to 90 seconds.

Why do interviewers ask it?

To check that you understand the role, can do it, and can explain your value clearly and confidently.

How should a fresher answer?

Lead with relevant skills, one project or internship that proves them, and how quickly you learn. Be specific about what you built.

How long should the answer be?

About 60 to 90 seconds. Practise aloud with a timer.

What should I avoid saying?

Vague claims, what you want instead of what you offer, running down other candidates, and saying you simply need the job.

What if I have no experience for the role?

Focus on transferable skills, projects, certifications and learning speed, with one example that proves it.

Your next step

Write your two best proof points today, then practise the answer out loud once. Having it ready lets you handle the rest of the interview with less pressure.
